Review 229: About a Boy
Based on the novel About a Boy by Nick Hornby, Will Freeman (Hugh Grant) is a handsome, smooth-taking bachelor whose primary goal in life is avoiding any kind of responsibility.
When he visits a support group for single mums, he invents an imaginary son in order to meet attractive single mothers, Will gets a hilarious lesson about life from a bright but hopelessly geeky, 12-year-old named Marcus (Nicholas Hoult). Now, as Will struggles to teach Marcus the art of being cool, Marcus teaches Will that you're never to old to grow up.
Will's philosophy is that "all men are islands" which is based on a famous quote from John Donne.
Director's Paul & Chris Weitz direction is sensitive, the cinematography is the soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy is catchy, the production design is splendid (Will’s penthouse in particular stands out as an idealic home that we want. Complete with it’s own espresso machine,
The film is an acting triumph, Hugh Grant Will greatly enjoys living by not caring for anyone but himself. He's immature and self centred and he likes it that way. He has no sense of responsibility and never considers the feeling of those around him. In his mind, he’s the star of his own show.
Nicholas Hoult definitely impressed playing Marcus
Toni Collette delivers a smimply transfixing, transformative performance playing Fiona, Marcus' mother
