Review 372: Trumbo
Trumbo is a fascinating bio pic, one that rides smoothly to the finish line thanks to a strong, winning performance by Bryan Cranston.
Set during the cold war era of the 1950's and 60's, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) is high-in-demand screenwriter in Hollywood who along with 10 other Blacklisted Hollywood screenwriters are subpoenaed to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities regarding alleged communist activities in Hollywood. After refusing to questions directly, he is allowed to remain in America but unable to work as a screenwriter. What follows is a turbulent series of events as Trumbo seeks to provide for his family and write anonymously for Hollywood under various pseudonyms.
