Review 401: Silence

Silence is a harrowing, stunning and powerful historical drama film, one of Martin Scorsese's best films and a showcase for the talents of Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver.

Based on the historical novel Silence by Shusaku Endo, In the 17th Century, Christian preists Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver) travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor Cristovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson) at a time when Christianity was outlawed, When they are captured and imprisoned, both men are plagued into an odyssey that will test their faith, challenge their sanity and perhaps, risk their very lives.

The plot is a beautiful rendering of the Endo novel. It's a very difficult narrative that Scorsese himself has described as unadaptable but amazingly enough, he and his co-writer Jay Cocks have pulled it off with skill,  and depth.

Martin Scorsese's direction is unobtrusive  the ambient score by Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge is unique and   A monumental

Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver are doing some their best work here playing Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe

5/5.
