Review 712: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is the adaptation of the books that I have been waiting for, one that respects its source material, one that at last penetrates and embraces its roots in Greek Mythology and doesn't treat its audience with contempt.
Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell whom you may recognise as the young Ryan Reynolds in The Adam Project), is a 12-year-old is accused by Zeus (Lance Reddick) King of the Gods of stealing his Masterbolt and with the help of his friends Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) races to find it and restore order to Olympus.
In terms of adaptation, this show is much, much more faithful to the book than the 2010 film. Another edge this show has over the film is the pacing, whereas the film felt rushed, this show takes it time to build its world and for us as an audience to get to know the characters.
Scobell, Jeffries and Simhadri are all likeable, charasmatic and bring distinct mannerims to their roles. Scobell expertly captures the snarky attitude that Percy embodies as well
Dior Goodjohn also has my stamp of approval playing Clarisse La Rue
