Review 238: Wreck-It Ralph
Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it's "Game Over" for the entire arcade?
The plot is very Toy Story in the sense that during the time when the kids are playing the arcade games, the characters play the game as normal and when the kids are gone the arcade game characters leave their normal in-game roles and are free to travel to other games and just like Who Framed Roger Rabbit there are many cameo appearances by a number of licensed video-game characters. For example, one scene from the film shows Ralph attending a support group for the arcade's various villain characters, including Clyde from Pac-Man, Doctor Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog, and Bowser from Super Mario Bros.
It's a very emotional character driven story and some of it is about lonliness, it's a story about a Bad Guy who-well doesn't like being a bad guy and he wants a change and that makes us care about him and feel sorry for him. It's also a story about believing in yourself, helping your friends (friendship) and standing up for what you believe is right, Ralph wants to be a hero and he'll stop at nothing to gain a medal and but this movie shows that you don't have to be win a medal to be a hero. Moving on to the films subject of friendship Vanellope and Ralph are not crowed followers and they want to be the winner. They start off at first not liking each other but when they are forced to work togehter they realize that they have a lot in common and that friendship comes across as a very strong and powerful friendship and they will do anything to help each other become a winner, also as the film goes on Felix and Ralph also get a mutual friendship going on between them as they become closer.
On the subject of standing up for you believe is right, Ralph thinks arcade game bad guys diserve a medal and some respect from the good guys and throughout the film he stands up for himself and others in his possition.
Director Rich Moore's animation direction is sharp, the animation is gorgeous, the sound effects are clever/catchy, the score by Henry Jackman is spectacular, beautiful arcade game settings, the scenery is breathtaking, the action scenes are thrilling, the jokes are well placed, witty and hilarious, the production design is sensational (they created the inside of arcade games), the character design is wonderful, the video game references are clever and highly appealing to video games geeks and the twist and turns are jaw-dropping.
The whole voice cast was wonderful, John C. Reilly is just wonderful as Ralph and his vocal performance is an excellent blend of comedy and honest emotion, Sarah Silverman is annoying but kinda likeable as as Vanellope, Jack McBrayer is very funny as Fix-It Felix, Jr., Jane Lynch is just superb as Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun, I actually Alan Tudyk to be a very fun comedic villain and the rest of the cast is great.
Wreck-It Ralph has just got to be one of the most original and clever Disney animated films in recent years-and it's also a lot of fun, 4/5.
