Review 550: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

 

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an absurdly quirky, offbeat as well as delightfully charming comedy adventure film

Based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a juvenile delinquent who was abandoned by his mother, is taken to live with foster parents in the New Zealand 

Normally, this type of premise would be seen as stupid as the whole titular hunt is built upon a misunderstanding. But it's very well executed thanks to writer/director Taika Waititi's surprisingly  

At its core, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a bonding story and a coming-of-age story for our little hero Ricky Baker. It's a hunt for the true self    Underneath all of the quirky and weird stuff is a really charming central theme of personal relationships and loneliness and how you find out who you are through your relation to others.
