Review 34: Up
Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) is a 78-year-old man who has longed to travel the wilds of South America but has never had the chance to. Then one day because of an accident he caused he is ordered to move to a retirement home.
But he makes a plan and with the help of loads of helium balloons, he is able to fly his house away.
But Carl is not alone as a boy called Russel (Jordan Nagai) stores away on board and together they set off on the adventure of a lifetime.
The plot is of the most original, insane, touching, poignet, mad & heartwarming plots ever concocted by Pixar alone. The idea alone of a man using helium balloons to fly his house to another place is just mind blowing. Couldn't we all imagine wanting to do that at some point in our own lives?
Odley despite the insane plot and eye catching imagery of a house being flown by thousands of helium balloons. Up is the Pixar film that most closely resembles real life. Carl Fredricksen and his wife Ellie have shared this lifelong dream to go to Paradise Falls. Instead they live a long and happy life together forming their own adventure.
The beauty of Up is that it shows how important it is to enjoy the journey than the destination. Carl and his life with Ellie is the journey and Paradise Falls is the destination.
Director Pete Docter's animation direction is beautiful, the animation is fabulous, Its got to be one of the greatest looking animated films of all time, the score by Michael Giacchino is beautiful, the scenery is magnificent, there are great moments of intensity, there's never a dull moment, there are great moments of humor and it contains so many moods: its funny, its light hearted, its escapist, its tragic, it makes you want to cry (which is something we've never had in a Pixar film) I mean I'm sure the first half movie contains some of the most beautiful moments ever in a Pixar movie after the Toy Story films and its moral (do things while you've got the chance) is so strong.
The voice acting was excellent. Ed Asner is fabulous as Carl Fredricksen, a man who
Jordan Nagai is a very likeable ally
Christopher Plummer is a nasty villain.
Up is an amazing animated film and the most funny and original films I've seen in a long long time, 5/5.
