Despicable Me is a despicable (in a good way) animated film and a superb animated film debut for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures.

Gru (Steve Carell) is a super-villain with a small army of minions, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon, yes, the moon before his rival Vector (Jason Segel) get it. Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher).

The plot is hilarious-and also very simple, it's about a super-villain who adopts three children and who has his life turned upside down. It's generally realy fun fluff, exciting to watch and features all the style of an entertaining animation picture, but all the hilarity of a modern animated that apeals to all ages.
Among the things that make Despicable Me so funny is the minions, who are so funny about them is they are like a younger brother which is something all types of audiences can really relate to.
Other things that are great about this movie is that it has a heart and a soul: the heart is that it's sweet, it's lightweight and it's funny and a film were you can just relax and have a good time.
The soul is that it has a naughty side to it, it's escapist in the sense that anyone of any age can just realx and enjoy it.

Directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud's animation direction is fun, the animation is exquisite, the production design is incredible (locations such as Gru's lab and Vetors lair really stand out for me, the character design is precise (just check out the Minions), the score by Heitor Pereira and Pharrell Williams is catchy, the tension is brilliant (theres a scene were Gru and two of minions are trying to steal the Shrink Gun from Vector which is so tension filled), the humor is infectious and the ending superb.

The voice cast is superb, Steve Carell is lots of fun as Gru, he's calculating, evil cruel, mean and really, really Despicable and carell does that with such joy. Russell Brand is just wonderful as Dr. Nefario

I cannot think of an actress better suited to playing a terrible mother than Julie Andrews in the role of Marlena, Gru's mother, she puts on such a convincing accent and appropriately imperialous.

Dana Gaier and Elsie Fisher are adorable as Edith and Agnes and even though Miranda Cosgrove is annoying as Margo, I think she's just ment to be. Will Arnett is also very intimidating as The Bank of Evil President Mr. Perkins and Jason Segel is a very fun villain.

Despicable Me is a terrific animated film and fun for the whole family, 4/5.
