Review 155: Seabiscuit

Seabiscuit is a beautifully inspiring and  as the titular horse. 

Based on the non fiction book Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand, Seabiscuit tells the true story of three men, a woman and a horse during the Great Depression. They are a jockey, a businessman, his wife and a trainer - and the undersized racehorse 

At a time when America was on its knees 

Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Cooper and Jeff Bridges are superb in this film and deliver fine performances all round. The group of unlikely underdogs play off of each other superbly and their report and chemistry is the emotional centre of this film. These people are the reason we care about 

Maguire, fresh off from playing the web head in Sam Raimi's blockbuster Spider-Man, imbues Red Polland  and an innate likability that its really hard not to root for him 

The screenplay by writer/director Gary Ross   direction is the cinematography is beautiful and captures the  of 1930s America the score by Randy Newman is rousing and 

Banks (who also played Betty Brant in Spider-Man) is 

Chris Cooper, fresh off of playing the odious Alexander Conklin in The Bourne Identity,  playing housetrainer Tom Smith
